The trip from Košice to Poprad: D1 plus a short stretch

You head west out of Košice on the D1, pass Spišská Nová Ves and Levoča, and after crossing the Tatra foothills arrive in Poprad. The route is realistically 130 km long and takes an hour and a half in acceptable traffic. Traffic slows down at the exits to the Tatras on Friday afternoons and winter weekends, especially towards Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica.

Skiers heading to the slopes, exits from the Tatras and daily transit through Spiš make this one of the most heavily travelled routes in eastern Slovakia. For locals, it is an everyday connection; for mountain visitors, it is a far more comfortable alternative to the regional train.

Poprad: gateway to the High Tatras

For most travellers Poprad is mainly a logistics point: the Tatra electric railway runs from here to the main resorts and an international airport is located here. But the town itself has a surprisingly rich past that shouldn't be skipped.

The centre is St. Egidius Square with an early Gothic church where wall paintings from the 15th century are preserved, among them the oldest known depiction of the Tatra peaks in Slovak art. Note the details on the Renaissance bell tower next to the church, which evoke Poprad's ties to the trading towns of Spiš.

The Spišská Sobota district, a municipal heritage reserve since 1953, is worth a separate visit. The medieval core feels like an open-air museum: a Baroque plague column, a Renaissance bell tower, a Gothic altar in the Church of St. George by Master Paul of Levoča. The Sub-Tatra Museum holds over 47,000 items including remains of a Neanderthal from nearby Gánovce, rare evidence of settlement under the Tatras.

Frequently asked questions

What's the road condition like towards the Tatras in winter?

The main D1 is generally maintained, but exits to Tatra resorts (Štrbské Pleso, Stará Lesná) can be slowed by snow. On Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, expect 30+ minutes of delay. Check current conditions via "Zelená vlna" before departure.

What's the price range for Košice → Poprad?

The price is usually €8–10 per seat. If the driver is going to a morning shift, it can be lower; on Fridays in season, when a full car heads to the Tatras, it can be slightly higher.

Can I get from Poprad to Štrbské Pleso cheaply?

The Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) runs from Poprad almost every hour, and a ticket costs about €3–4. Many carpool drivers continue directly into the Tatra resorts. If that suits you, you arrange it in chat.

Is the city of Poprad itself worth visiting?

Poprad's centre takes about an hour to walk through: St. Egidius Square, the church with its Tatra frescoes, the bell tower. I recommend planning Spišská Sobota separately; it is a municipal heritage reserve with an authentic medieval atmosphere.
